Ernest Tubb - Hits of 1942
The Texas Troubadour Ernest Tubb began his career as a Jimmie Rodgers wannabe before crafting his own style of honky-tonk country. Tubb had been guided early on by Rodgers' widow, who gave him the Singing Brakeman's guitar and helped to sponsor his first recordings. The Texan's voice changed after he underwent a tonsillectomy as a young man, however, and he gave up on emulating Rodgers' yodel. With a baritone voice and conversational singing style, Tubb won stardom with his "Walking the Floor Over You" in 1941. Backed by a crackerjack band featuring sinewy electric guitar leads, Tubb became very popular on the Grand Ole Opry and relocated to Nashville from Texas. He starred in a few movies, continued to score hit after hit, and was the first country artist to play Carnegie Hall. In 1947 his Ernest Tubb Record Shop began hosting the post-Opry Saturday night Jamboree where many up-and-comers were discovered, including Loretta Lynn, with whom Tubb recorded duets in the 1960s.
